As David Warlick reminds us, today's information is networked, digital, and often overwhelming. We are still needed, perhaps now more than ever, to serve as guides through the digital chaos. What can School Media Specialists do now to start the ball rolling? What are some concrete steps they might take?

What Is Our Challenge?
David Warlick
As we look to next half century we cannot ignore that there is a dramatic change in our patrons and what they seem to want.
David Warlick says in Redefining Literacy 2.0 that:
"For the first time in history, we are preparing our students for a future we cannot clearly describe.
Many of the students we are preparing enjoy and are accustomed to information experiences outside the classroom that are richer, deeper, and possibly more pedagogically appropriate to learning than their information experiences inside our schools.
The information landscape that we live and work within has changed dramatically.
We need a new story, one that represents a rapidly changing world, a new generation of learners--our children, and an information landscape that is both wondrously useful and surprisingly fragile."
As library media specialists, the changing nature of information is fundamental to what we do. This course, although titled "Integrating Technology Into the School Media Center", is about integrating literacy into the School Media Center. The technology is merely a tool. Although by the end of this course your toolbox will be overflowing, the thrust of our course will be to learn how these tools can facilitate the following 21st Century Skills (from The Partnership for 21st Century Skills):
